Rather than turning back the clock to vintage cassettes and novelty CD players, British musician Tom Vek is proposing a modern antidote to streaming fatigue: a dedicated digital music player designed to champion album artwork and independent music downloads. His device, named Sleevenote, aims to bridge the tactile magic of physical vinyl packaging with the convenience of digital audio collections.
Vek, known for his 2005 breakthrough album We Have Sound and subsequent releases such as Leisure Seizure and Newer Symbols, first began prototyping Sleevenote in 2020. Inspired by the sprawling liner notes and artwork of vinyl records, the original concept aimed to give visual prominence to digital album art. However, early efforts hit major stumbling blocks. Sourcing rare square displays proved difficult, and the initial prototype was unwieldy—roughly the footprint of a 7-inch vinyl single, but significantly thicker and heavier.
Now, Vek has unveiled a redesigned iteration of Sleevenote that is substantially smaller, more affordable, and ready for consumer hands. Priced at $349 for the final batch of its "Day One Edition," the device marks a major milestone in Vek's transition from musician to hardware entrepreneur.
While Vek recognizes the growing consumer demand for offline, distraction-free listening, he remains critical of the tech industry's reliance on retro nostalgia. He argues that while cassette and CD revivals indicate a healthy desire for dedicated audio hardware, resurrecting outdated formats is a missed opportunity. Cassettes, he notes, offered poor audio fidelity, while purchasing second-hand physical media does little to support active recording artists.
Instead, Vek advocates for thoughtfully engineered "indie tech" that encourages fans to purchase digital music downloads directly. Describing Sleevenote as a "Kindle for music," he envisions a platform where listeners build permanent, curated offline collections that offer far greater financial compensation to musicians than conventional streaming platforms or retro resales.
Balancing UI design, photography, and industrial design alongside co-founder Chris, Vek hopes Sleevenote will inspire a new generation of hardware created outside the dominance of big-tech ecosystems.
