Growing up surrounded by agricultural plantations and rural landscapes in Cameroon, painter Marc Padeu often wondered why iconic religious artworksuch as the Last Supper or the Nativity—was almost exclusively depicted with European faces and settings. Today, the 36-year-old artist is challenging that traditional canon by setting classic European Renaissance motifs directly within Cameroonian cocoa farms and everyday rural scenes.

Padeu’s latest paintings are currently featured in a new solo exhibition at the Larkin Durey gallery in London. His distinctive visual style seamlessly blends contemporary African life with classical European art traditions, placing local villagers and farm workers into compositions reminiscent of old master paintings. For Padeu, relocating these universal stories of sacrifice, hope, and family into a familiar African environment feels like a natural way to tell profound human stories.

reminiscent of= 令人聯想到、令人想起過往作品或事物

Born in Bafang and currently based in Yaoundé, Padeu inherited his artistic talent from his mother, a fashion designer. He was among the first graduates from Cameroon’s inaugural state fine arts university program, funding his early studies by painting biblical murals inside local churches. That early experience working on church scaffolding gave him a deep appreciation for how imagery shapes human perception. Later, discovering the work of African American artist Kerry James Marshall showed him that Black figures could be reestablished at the very heart of historical art traditions.

Rather than offering explicit political commentary, Padeu focuses his work on fundamental existential and spiritual themes—birth, sacrifice, death, and promise. Though he acknowledges that African artists often face a lack of local art infrastructure, he sees himself as heir to an extraordinarily rich culture. By re-framing classic masterworks through the daily lives of cocoa farm workers, Padeu offers a fresh and timeless perspective on global art history.

rather than doing...= 與其做……倒不如 / 而非做……(表示對比或選擇)
