China's ambition to become a major player in global aviation reaches a new milestone as its first self-developed passenger jet embarks on its debut international commercial flight. The Comac C919 is scheduled to take off from Beijing Capital International Airport on Wednesday afternoon, landing in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, just over two hours later.

embark on [something]= 開始、著手進行(新的重大計畫或旅程)

Operated by Air China, the flight marks the first time the narrow-body aircraft is being used on an international commercial route. The C919, which is similar in size to the Boeing 737, has been flying domestic routes across China since 2023. Built by the state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (Comac), the aircraft has long been promoted as China's answer to the Boeing and Airbus duopoly that dominates global aviation.

However, industry experts caution that challenging the established aviation giants will take considerable time. Scott Kennedy, a senior adviser at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, described the short flight to neighboring Mongolia as largely a public relations move. He pointed out that the plane was delayed by several years, remains less fuel-efficient than competing models from Boeing and Airbus, and relies heavily on Western-made components. A 2020 study revealed that more than half of the C919's suppliers are based in the United States.

Building commercial airliners presents immense technological hurdles compared to other high-tech sectors where China has advanced rapidly, such as electric vehicles and robotics. Kyle Chan, a fellow at Brookings focusing on Chinese industrial policy, emphasized that coordinating global supply chains and manufacturing ultra-precise jet components makes aircraft construction an order of magnitude more difficult than producing electric cars.

an order of magnitude= 數量級(表示成倍或極大幅度的差距)

Production challenges also remain evident. Last year, Comac delivered only 15 units of the C919, falling far short of its target of 75. Furthermore, the aircraft has yet to receive safety certification from European or American aviation regulators, limiting its global market reach.

fall far short of= 遠未達到(目標或標準)

Despite these hurdles, China views domestic aircraft manufacturing as a strategic priority for national security. Leading Chinese aviation expert Zhang Yanzhong noted that relying entirely on foreign countries for large aircraft technology poses strategic risks, though he acknowledged that a long path lies ahead before achieving full commercial success. For now, Wednesday's flight to Ulaanbaatar represents an important symbolic step in China's long-term aviation journey.
