Swiss runner Audrey Werro produced a spectacular performance at the European Athletics Championships, defeating Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson to claim gold in the women's 800 meters.
The 22-year-old Werro crossed the finish line in 1 minute 54.81 seconds, setting a new championship record that had stood since 1982. Britain's Hodgkinson took silver with a time of 1:55.01, while Femke Broeders-Bol of the Netherlands secured the bronze medal.
Werro's victory marked a remarkable turn of fortune following a dramatic 24 hours. Just a day earlier, her spot in the final was in doubt after she fell in the semi-finals. Despite being spiked early in the final and setting the pace into a strong wind for most of the race, Werro held off Hodgkinson's late charge down the home stretch in front of 23,000 roaring fans.
After crossing the line, Werro celebrated with a lion pose—a tribute to her father, who used to tell her as a shy child to run like a lion. Hodgkinson was gracious in defeat, praising Werro's resilience and strength after such an intense comeback.
