A sprinting robot running faster than Usain Bolt before crashing into a padded wall in a burst of sparks captured the world's attention this week. The World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing showcased China's rapid advance in robotics alongside a series of hilarious mechanical failures that went viral online.

go viral= 在網絡上快速瘋傳、走紅

The five-day event featured more than 2,000 humanoid robots developed by over 660 companies. Spectators watched android martial artists execute knockout kicks, robotic teams march into arenas guided by robotic dogs, and machines compete in weightlifting, soccer, and obstacle courses.

The games highlighted impressive physical engineering achievements. The fastest sprinter, Tiangong Ultra, finished the 100-meter dash in record time, while another robot set a standing jump mark of 3.4 meters. Advanced liquid cooling systems enabled engineers to increase motor power, giving the machines faster and stronger limb movements. However, many robots still struggled with basic balance and navigation, leading to comical falls that amused millions of online viewers.

enable [object] to [verb]= 使……能夠做某事

Behind the entertainment lies serious government ambition. China produced nearly 90 percent of the world's humanoid robots last year, making robotics a national priority to solve labor shortages and boost industrial power. The games also carried political weight, taking place shortly before a planned summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump, who recently banned imports of Chinese humanoid robots citing security concerns.

cite [something]= 引用/以……為理由

Robotics experts noted that while Chinese companies have made extraordinary progress in building physical bodies for robots over the past year, artificial intelligence systems still need work. At the same time, observers expressed mixed feelings about the future, admiring the technological strides while voicing concerns over potential military uses of armed humanoid machines.

express mixed feelings= 表達複雜/矛盾的情感
