At the epicenter of this biomedical frontier is dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a powerful psychoactive compound found naturally in the traditional ayahuasca brew as well as the bark of the jurema preta tree, which thrives in Brazil’s dry Caatinga biome. Researchers at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte have spent years investigating ayahuasca’s antidepressant potential.
