Cycling Star Tadej Pogačar Shares Hospital Update After Vuelta Crash

Cycling champion Tadej Pogačar has shared a message from his hospital bed after a painful crash forced him to leave the Vuelta a España race.

The 27-year-old Slovenian star was leading the famous Spanish cycling race by nearly four minutes before crashing heavily during the eighth stage on Saturday. Pogačar was hoping to win the Vuelta to complete a career clean sweep of cycling's three major Grand Tour races.

Despite his injuries, Pogačar showed good spirits on social media. He posted a photo on Instagram wearing a neck brace with bandages near his eyebrow and on his hand. He also added the famous upbeat song "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees to the post.

Medical reports from his team, UAE Team Emirates, confirm that Pogačar suffered a broken collarbone, a minor neck fracture, a concussion, and several cuts. Doctors said he has no other major injuries, but he will need surgery on his broken collarbone.

It is currently unclear when Pogačar will be able to return to competitive cycling. He is expected to miss the World Championships in Canada in late September. Meanwhile, Spanish rider Enric Mas took over the overall lead in the Vuelta after winning stage nine on Sunday.
