People taking some ferries between Great Britain and Ireland will soon need to show a valid passport before they board. The new rules begin on 28 September 2026.

People taking ...= 關係子句簡化形式,意思是「正在搭乘……的人」before they board= 意思是「他們登船前」;此處board作不及物動詞使用,表示「登上交通工具」

At present, passengers are not always asked for a passport. They can often travel with another kind of photo identification. The UK Border Force and ferry companies say the change will help them keep passenger information correct before each trip.

not always asked= 部分否定,表示「不一定每次都會被要求」help them keep passenger information correct= help+受詞+原形動詞,表示「幫助某人做某事」

Stena Line will require passports on its routes from Holyhead to Dublin and from Fishguard to Rosslare. However, passengers can still travel without a passport on its services through Belfast, Liverpool, Cairnryan, or Heysham. The company is contacting people who have already booked tickets.

people who have already booked tickets= 現在完成式表示先前訂票的動作與旅客目前的情況有關

Irish Ferries will require a valid passport on all its routes between Britain and the Republic of Ireland. There are still no passport checks between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

British and Irish citizens do not legally need passports to travel between the two countries. This is because of the Common Travel Area, an agreement that has existed for more than 100 years. It also covers the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

an agreement that has existed for more than 100 years= 現在完成式搭配for,表示從過去延續至今的狀態

Even so, transport companies can make passports a condition of travel. Airlines have already introduced similar rules. Aer Lingus joined Ryanair in requiring passports for travel between Great Britain and Ireland in February 2026.

Even so= 「即使如此」,先承認前述事實,再提出形成對比的內容make passports a condition of travel= make+受詞+補語的結構,表示「把護照訂為旅行條件」joined Ryanair in requiring= 表示「加入瑞安航空的行列,同樣開始要求」
