If you open Apple Maps in the United States today and look at the Great Lake bordering New York and Canada, you will no longer see Lake Ontario. Instead, the map displays the name "Lake America."
Apple has updated its navigation app to reflect a name change ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump amid an ongoing trade dispute with Canada. The tech giant follows Google, which updated its own map service shortly after the new name appeared in the U.S. Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).
The change depends on where you view the map. Users in the United States see "Lake America," while Canadian users still see "Lake Ontario." International users viewing the app outside both countries see both names displayed together.
This is not the first time digital navigation apps have updated geographic labels following U.S. government directives. Last year, both Apple and Google renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America" after a similar executive order.
However, not every navigation service is adopting the new labels. MapQuest has refused to change the names of either body of water. The decision appears to be paying off for the legacy mapping service, which recently climbed to the top spot on Apple’s App Store.
