As tragic flash floods devastate northern Nepal, families around the world are desperately turning to social media in search of missing loved ones. Among the hundreds unaccounted for after the disaster are scores of religious pilgrims who were embarking on a sacred journey to Mount Kailash, a holy peak located in Chinese-controlled Tibet.

unaccounted for= (因災難等)下落不明的、尚未確認安危的embark on= 展開、踏上(重大或具挑戰性的旅程、計畫)

The catastrophe struck near a major border crossing connecting Nepal and Tibet. A section of a glacier broke away high in the mountains, sending a violent wave of ice, rock, and water roaring down a river valley 4,000 feet below. The torrent swept away roads and completely destroyed concrete structures, including the Gyirong Port Immigration Office, right as groups of pilgrims were gathering to cross the border.

Mount Kailash holds immense spiritual significance for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of indigenous Tibetan religions. In Hindu tradition, it is revered as the ultimate abode of Lord Shiva, a deity associated with cosmic power and destruction. Because scaling the peak is strictly forbidden due to its sacred status, pilgrims traditionally undertake an arduous 33-mile trek around the mountain's base at extreme altitudes.

revere as= 被尊崇為、被敬奉為

Authorities from China and Nepal have reported 853 foreign nationals missing, including at least 287 Indian citizens and 80 Americans. Among them is Vivek Srivastav, an Atlanta-based biotech scientist, as well as an elderly Indian couple in their 60s traveling with a group of 32 pilgrims. The Isha Foundation, an international spiritual organization led by Sadhguru (Jagadish Vasudev), also reported losing contact with three guides and 77 pilgrims from 19 different countries.

While fatal stampedes have occurred at large religious gatherings in the past, climate-driven flood disasters sweeping away worshippers in the high Himalayas are rare. Environmental experts from the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) note that global warming has doubled the rate of ice loss across Himalayan glaciers over the past quarter-century. Spiritual leaders and environmental advocates are now calling for urgent action to protect the region's mountain ecosystems as changing climate patterns increasingly threaten both local communities and historic pilgrimage routes.
