Fourteen people have gone on trial in Paris over the deadliest recorded disaster involving migrants attempting to cross the English Channel. The judicial proceedings, which opened on Tuesday and are expected to last three weeks, follow the drowning of 27 people after an inflatable boat deflated and capsized in November 2021. Two passengers survived the tragedy, while four others remain unaccounted for.

gone on trial= 受審;接受審判remain unaccounted for= 依然下落不明

Prosecutors accuse the defendants of belonging to Afghan and Iraqi Kurdish smuggling networks that organized the perilous crossing from camps in northern France. The men face charges including manslaughter and facilitating illegal immigration as part of an organized gang. Nine of the suspects appeared in court on the opening day, including one in custody, while two others are being tried in absentia after evading French authorities. Investigators said the smugglers launched an uncertified, overcrowded vessel that was unfit for open sea navigation and lacked appropriate life jackets.

in absentia= 缺席(審判)

The victims, aged between seven and 46, were primarily Iraqi Kurds, alongside nationals from Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Vietnam. More than 100 civil parties, including relatives of those who perished, are participating in the trial. In a statement read out in court, survivor Issa Omar described how passengers frantically attempted to bail out water around 2:30 a.m. before the vessel suddenly capsized in one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.

bail out= (用容器)舀出船艙積水

The tragedy raised severe questions regarding emergency response efforts after nearly 12 hours passed before rescue services located the boat, despite dozens of distress calls. A French fishing vessel eventually alerted authorities after spotting bodies floating in the water. A UK inquiry published in February concluded that several of the deaths were avoidable, finding that a French naval vessel had failed to respond to an alert from the UK coastguard.

failed to respond to= 未能對…作出回應或處置
