American tennis star Coco Gauff made a dramatic comeback on Wednesday at the US Open, beating Russia's Mirra Andreeva to reach the semifinals. Gauff, who won the tournament in 2023, saved two match points—situations where her opponent was just one point away from winning the match—before securing a 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2 victory at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.
Gauff struggled early in the match, making 14 unforced errors in the first set as fifth-seeded Andreeva quickly took the lead. After losing the opening set 6-2, Gauff took a break in the locker room to reset her focus. She said she felt inspired by her fellow American player Frances Tiafoe, who had also achieved an impressive comeback victory the previous night.
The second set was an intense battle. Gauff twice saved match points during a tense tiebreak, including winning a long 39-shot rally with a strong backhand. After winning the second set, Gauff dominated the final set 6-2 to complete her victory. She will now face second seed Elena Rybakina in the semifinals after Rybakina became the new world number one player.
